Match Reports

August 20, Game 18 v Christchurch Technical at Riccarton Domain, Result 3-0 to Technical

No luck again, the story of the season. The game started badly when a penalty was given for an innocuous challenge by Johno in the box. Caleb made some great challenges at right back to keep another couple of attacks out. A little later in the first half a defensive lapse saw a second goal go in, again no chance for James.
Glenn put a great ball through to Grant, but his shot went wide. Marty O Brien worked hard early on and also combined well with Glenn. However for all our efforts it was 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw us camp in their half for the first 15 minutes, more shots went wide or were saved. Our reward for this was a Tech attack which ended in another goal. Again we worked hard to get back in the game, Grant went close and Liam had some opportunites too. Glenn had a solo run past their midfield to the edge of the box, unfortunately there wasn't enough power in the shot and the keeper saved comfortably.
A small amount of history was made as dad and son combination Nick and Glenn played as the twin centre midfielders. The lack of more subs saw us slow towards the end with the outside halves Gary and Luke near exhausted. It was a hot day which sapped most of us. Matt B played solidly at the back to get player of the day. Ryan Astle got rewarded for a solid effort at the back with a seat on the MPL subs bench.
Lots of credit to the lads for their wig wearing and beer drinking. Hopefully we will see you all back next season when we will be a better side.

August 13, Game 17 v Christchurch United at QE2, Result 5-2 loss

Outgunned in the first half left us down at the break. Jason Paul finished well and got both the goals. This was a game we should have got points from.

August 6, Game 16 v Burnside at Riccarton, Result 0-0 draw

Still can't score, story of the year.

July 30, Game 15 v Western at Walter Park, Result 3-3 draw

A good performance from a depleted side. Simon and Caleb had already played half a game for the Prem youth. We got off to a good start and were winning at half time. However Western closed the gap in the second half. Scorers were Luke, Liam and Gary H.

July 23, Game 14 v Halswell at Riccarton, Result 2-1 loss to Halswell

A piss poor effort from a shadow first team to lose to lowly Halswell. Further aggravated by Dave Shannon getting sent off. The only highlight was Innocent's solo effort to score.

July 16, Game 13 v Ferrymead at Barnett Park, Result 3-0 loss to Ferrymead

Another frustrating day with Attah and Mohammed arriving late to the game. This meant Innocent did a 20 minute stint in goal, and played quite well there. A penalty against us when one of the Ferrymead players handled the ball in our box was bad luck as was the goal they scored despite Innocent diving the right way.
We made chances and the new Japanese boy Yu-Gi-Oh was running well but someone gave him Jasons's boots (probably Jason). A deflected free kick made it two to Ferrymead at half time,
The second half effort was an improvement over the first half and as has been the story of the season, if we had converted half our chances we would have won.

July 9, Game 12 v Nomads at Riccarton Domain, Result 3-0 loss to Nomads

We ended up short of players and Martin O'Brien stepped up to fill a spot in the middle. Matt Thomas had the first of his two games for the afternoon. Gamewise the first half was pretty even with some good moves from the back created by Johnathon and Glenn. Up front it was the same old story, when you're not scoring you don't score.
The experiment of using Carl up front later on was brave but also doomed (sorry Carl).

July 2, Game 11 v Rangers at Eric Adam Park, Result 1-0 to Rangers

We missed chances from everywhere and when we weren't missing we were passing in front of the goal. Definitely the better team, but no goals means no win. Simon and Glenn were the pick of the bunch.

June 25, Game 10 v Brighton at Riccarton, Result 3-0 to Brighton

Arguably the worst result of the season against a team that would struggle to win in the Presidents grade. The ability is there but the constant struggle to play to Macky and Dave's plan took its toll in mistakes.

June 18, Game 9 v Technical at Ensors Road, Result 3-0 to Technical

A defensive lapse saw us 1-0 down mid way through the half and a second was added shortly after. Both goals were avoidable and key players knew they could have done better. The second half saw another goal go in.
Our best chances fell to Dan in the first half and he ended up with a soft shot at the keeper and Glenn had a good shot saved in the second half.
As a spectator it has to be said that the system of play the way you're facing and limit to almost two touch sounds like the stuff you do at training. Unfortunately this wasn't practice and some poor decision making, lack of control and players not in position allowed this to fall apart.

June 11, Knockout v Burnside at Burnside, Result 2-2 draw and 4-3 loss on Penalties

A game of missed opportunites. Down 2-0 mid way through the second half we came back to 2-2 and went to extra time. We made far more opportunites than Burnside and even though Jason got his number 11 back he only got a single goal. Dave B and Gerald missed their penalties.

June 4, Game 8 v Christchurch United at Riccarton, Result 1-0 to United

A bad start saw Dave Shannon aka linesman on the cell phone forgetting to look at the ball going out, play continued and United were up within a minute. For large parts of the first half we continued to attack but it would have been easier to get the guys to shoot wide knowing one would accidentally be on target as everything directed at target went wide.
The second half was similar, Glenn had a chance for glory at the end but the keeper managed to get a hand to the ball and push his shot wide. Nicki has since found the 11 shirt behind her washing machine, so Jason has to score a goal every week from now on.

May 28, Game 7 v Burnside at Burnside, Result 0-0 Draw

We experimented by giving some out of form first team players a run. Second half we also gave Dave Shannon a run, this produced a booking but not a lot else. Aaron got injured. Burnside had a player that got sent off and still looked more likely to win.
Jason Paul wants his 11 shirt back, if you have it at home give it to him please as he can't score without it! We have also lost 2 pairs of shorts, at this rate we may be in skins come the end of the season.

May 14, Game 6 v Western at Riccarton Domain, Result 1-0 to Western

The most excitement in the first half came when our keeper Attah was taken out. Our other Arab rushed to his rescue and the name of the Arab nation and got sent off for his troubles. This left us with 10, however the Western player involved in the incident proved himself to be a total ****head and got booked for a second time 5 minutes later to bring the sides level at 10 players each.
We had chances to win it in the second half with Glenn putting in some good balls from the right but we didn't take them and Western stole it minutes from full time.
Innocent looked in a class of his own and played great up front.

May 7, Knockout Cup v New Brighton at Riccarton Domain, Result 1-0 to Avon

Leo, Chris and Morgan from the Canterbury League side made the difference and we won. Aaron Dixon has come into some good form.

April 30, Game 5 v Halswell at Halswell Domain, Result 3-2 to Avon

A coach from a neutral team commented that we had some pretty useful players and Halswell were no match for us. That's pretty nice to hear.

April 23, Game 4 v Ferrymead at Riccarton Domain, Result 3-2 to Ferrymead

First half was pretty even and at half time it was 1-1. Avon scored first thanks to the Ferrymead keeper not holding on to the ball and Dave Shannon got his simplest goal ever.
The second half has always been the hardest and so it proved again.
Scorers Dave Shannon and Ollie.

Game 3 v Nomads at Tullet Park, Result 5-0 to Nomads

The first half started brightly with Avon on the attack for most of the initial 20 minutes. However the wheels fell off when Nomads made some space and scored. This was quickly followed by a second and we started to lose our shape.
At half time Dave S subbed himself but it didn't help much with another 3 goals being scored
Best performances of the day came from new Dave, Gary, TK and Kristian

Game 2 v Rangers at Riccarton, Result 2-1 to Rangers

The first half went well and things were steady at the back with Dan and Morgan adding their experience. With Glenn and Gary going forward we looked likely to score and Gary duly put one away after some soft defending by Rangers. TK and Dave worked well in the middle of the park to give some much missing bite.
The second half was a different story as Morgan subbed to do his Captains bit for the Canterbury League team, Glenn slotted into his position. With 15 to go we subbed Glenn off and not long after they scored 2 in quick succession.
TK played the best game I have seen him play and was POD.
Scorer - Gary.

Game 1 v Brighton at Bexley, Result 2-0 to Brighton

A lesson in intensity, trusting your team mates and pressurising the opposition. Down 2-0 by half time.
