Close game, some strange penalty decisions, 1 each way. Scrappy defending by us. Cameron made his first appearance. Another point to keep the momentum going.

Game 8 v Christchurch United, Parklands, June 3, Result 3-0 win

Game 7 v Burnside, Ray Blank, May 27, Result 2-1 win
The Avon team started the game well, taking the upper hand in the early stages. Lochlan had a strong start to the match. A lack of discipline mid way through the first half meant we lost our shape in defense. This allowed Burnside to play through us centrally, putting our defenders under pressure. Burnside’s goal came from a well worked move after about 40 minutes. They deserved the goal because they had been putting us under pressure with well structured, passing football. Avon received a corner late in the half. After a goal-mouth scramble, the captain John Weusten hit the top right corner from 12 yards. The subs went wild, we were back in it!
After a well worked move from the kick off, Jason Paul won the side a penalty after he was fouled in the box. Simon Bosma hit the bottom left corner (sending the keeper the wrong way) putting us 2-1 up. That was how it stayed with Avon once again taking the upper hand for the majority of the 2nd half. This was due to strong defending by the back four and a solid central midfield, who’s passing (& movement) consistently constructed scoring opportunities. The back four can all pat themselves on the back for a solid 90 minute performance. Pierre and JP, up front, both had good games, and are starting to work well together. TK came on and was effective in the midfield, winning 2nd phase ball & creating opportunities. Julian put in an excellent performance. He (amongst others) was influential for 90 minutes. There is plenty to work on, but it is a step in the right direction for a team with a strong team spirit, who will do well! This result shows the importance of scoring before and after half time, allowing the side to apply pressure to the opposition confidently.

Game 5 v Technical, Hillsborough, April 29, Result 0-3 loss

Game 4 v Ferrymead, Riccarton Domain, April 22, Result 0-4 loss
A loss to our bogey team. Reports are Pierre played well and Ollie (Div 1) had 3 shots tipped away.

Game 3 v Halswell, Halswell, April 15, Result 1-1 draw
Scorer Jason Paul.

Game 2 v Rangers, Eric Adam, April 8, Result 0-3 loss

Game 1 v Western, Riccarton Domain, April 1, Result 0-0 draw

The day all of us have been building up to for the past 10 weeks. After a lackluster run in the Brighton tournament we finally got to play on some grass without a force 10 Easterly pounding us. Western possibly thought they were going to be in for an easy day out but the first half was surprisingly even. Lochie had a one on one saved by the Western keeper and James saved from a corner, but apart from that there were few clear chances.
Second half Western got into gear (probably after getting a hurry up from their coach) and we had to weather the storm for the next 20 minutes. Danny was brought on up front and added some Chinese flair. His best effort coming from a huge diving header (each time the story is retold the distance gets longer), unfortunately the height over the bar was as great as the dive was long!
We finished strongly but couldn’t convert our chances. Pierre put a couple of shots over and Jason didn’t have his shooting boots on. Our game was built around our solid backline with Luc and Ryan keeping things tidy. Outside backs Sam and Jonno also played well. Simon toiled hard in the middle and Lochie tackled hard.

Brighton Tournament, Game 5 v Rangers, 1-1 draw

Brighton Tournament, Game 4 v Parklands, 2-1 loss

Brighton Tournament, Game 3 v Brighton, 5-0 loss

Brighton Tournament, Game 2 v Halswell, 3-0 loss

Three nil down by half time, as usual departing players scored against us with Dave Shannon and Gary Hendroff getting one each. Some changes in combinations at half time helped things and there was no further score in the second half. We had a couple of chances with Bashir having a one on one with the keeper in the first half. Unfortunately he took too long and got closed down without shooting. In the second half JP had a similar chance but he put it wide. The final lineup at the end of the second half seemed to have the measure of Halswell but despite some late pressure we couldn't score.
In summary a learning curve, the combinations are starting to form. The real test will be Brighton next week.

Brighton Tournament, Game 1 v Woolston Youth Team, 8-0 win

First game with new combinations v an inexperienced Woolston team. The scoring started early on with Danny W getting a couple. Before half time Simon B had one as did JP.
Second half Woolston held out for a fair while and then the floodgates opened again. Goals to Simon B, Dave and Alan put the game beyond doubt. Shortly before full time Simon converted a penalty to get his hattrick.
In summary hard to judge where we are at but a win is always welcome.
