Highlights, the fantastic attacking moves both down the flanks and the incisive balls down the middle using the pace of Phil, Scott and Cameron. Everyone who saw the team commented on how much they enjoyed watching the guys play compared to other teams in the club. The guys were encouraged to play patient good football with no long hopeful balls out the back or mid and to their credit they did that and it paid off. I also have to say our miserly defence was impressive and 9 clean sheets in 18 games is brilliant. A lot of credit also goes to our talented mids, without a quality supply to the front men you can't score and without equally hard work on defence you can't keep clean sheets.
In summary we were the best organised and most motivated team in the PDL and our results clearly showed that week in week out.
Biggest bonus - getting Manto dropped to us! This was followed closely by Cam, Sam, Glenn and others not getting picked up by the firsts when they were clearly the form players.
Best goal - Jeremy's goal v Burnside, followed by Glenn's strike against Western.
Biggest Disappointment - Phil being injured or away for a significant part of the season, his pace was just fantastic and great to watch.
Thanks to: Matt, JP, Pecky and others for regularly coming down to support us before their game. Also Cam's mum and dad plus Barb.

Match Reports

Game 1 v Cashmere, Avonhead, 4 April, Result 4-1 win It took some patience but our guys were rewarded with 4 second half goals.

Scorers: Jason Paul - 3, Ryan Mc - 1

Game 2 v Ferrymead, Ferrymead, 11 April, Result 2-0 win

A pivotal game. Playing against a strong Bays side we went down to 10 players after 10 mins when Brent our keeper was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. Glenn took the gloves and saved the resulting free kick. We re-organised at half time, with Shoes coming on in goal. We gradually worked our way into the game and the final 2-0 win was massive for us.

Scorers: Jason Paul - 2 (inc a pen)

Game 3 v Coastal, Avonhead, 18 April, Result 2-1 win

A hard fought game.

Scorers: Ryan Powell - 1, Ryan McIvor - 1

Game 4 v Chch United, Avonhead, 25 April, Result 3-0 win

We were on top early with some strong runs from JP. Unfortunately one of these knocked out the poor young lad in the United goal which shifted the balance of power. We went on to a strong win.

Scorers: Jason Paul - 1, Seppe - 1, Ryan Powell - 1

Game 5 v Western, Walter Park, 2 May, Result 6-3 win

A finely balanced game as we traded goals early on. We eventually powered away for our best result against Western reserves ever. Got our first bookings with our under two 19's getting yellows.

Scorers: Jason Paul - 4, Scott Marrow - 2

Game 6 v Halswell, Avonhead, 9 May, Result 2-0 win

Nice to knock off an MPL reserve side.

Scorers: Jason Paul - 1, Cameron Long - 1

Game 7 v Technical, Garrick Park, 16 May, Result 2-1 loss

A close game between the two top teams. We had the initial play and could easily have been up a goal or two. However we ended up down 2-0 mid way through the half to some well taken, but preventable goals. In the second half Luuk scored to get us back in it. We came home strongly and Cameron almost nicked it as we approached full time, one chance hit the post and another just went wide of the far post. No complaints, on another day we would have won it but that's football. So we lose our 100% record which has some positives, we know how bad it feels to lose and we learnt a lot from that.

Scorer: Luuk - 1

Game 8 v Nomads, Tulett Park, 30 May, Result 4-0 win

We got off to a great start and were soon in control. We let it slip towards the end with Nomads creating a few of their own chances. When we left their coach was still arguing with the lineman about an off side (like that would have changed the result).

Scorers: Ryan P - 1, Phil - 1, Jeremy S - 1, Scott - 1

Game 9 v Cashmere, Beckenham Domain, 6 June, Result 11-0 win

Despite them having only 10 players for the start and some bloody old ones at that we took ages to get going - in fact JP had already left to go to the firsts at that stage. When the goals finally arrived it was a deluge, with Phil helping himself to 5. I took off both Phil and Cam to give the rest of the squad a decent run. Also I moved Glenn into the mids for the first time this season as Josh Powell's immenent move back home meant we needed to get him back in the creative midfielder role.

Scorers: Phil - 5, Cameron L - 2, Jeremy - 1, Grant - 1, forget the other 2 poss Luuk and Tony?

Game 10 v Bays, Avonhead, 13 June, Result 3-0 win

A must win game against a team close to us in the comp. We were up for it and wiped them from the park. Big Sam had a great game.

Scorers: Sam LA - 1, Cameron L - 1, Phil - 1

Game 11 v Coastal, Bexley, 20 June, Result 4-2 win

End to end football, even though the Coastal side were bottom of the comp they proved a very good side. This wasn't helped by us getting both their goals and the fact it was Uni hols and a number of the regulars were away and Glenn was injured. However the Div 3 and Div 2 lads stepped up well and we were very grateful for their assistance.

Scorers: Scott - 3, Ryan P - 1

Game 12 v Chch United, Acott back field, 27 June, Result 7-2 win

The lads were a bit gutted as this was originally scheduled for the main field at QE, however we had to make do with the main dressing room - rather luxurious it was too. I thought we were going to have to do it hard but we just kept scoring. The big disappointment was they got the last goal! Oh yeah and our creative talent and neat warm-up drill man Josh had his last game which was a bit sad as we will miss him.

Scorers: Scott - 1, Grant - 1, Luuk - 2, Tony - 1, Cam L - 1, JOSH - 1

Game 13 v Western, Avonhead 2, 4 July, Result 1-1 draw

Tricky game as we were in the midst of the flu season plus Uni hols so a few guys playing out of position and some others stepping up again from Div 2 and Div 3. We went down early on to a misplaced cross which James couldn't hold. This put us on the back foot. We had chances but it was starting to look like one of those days as Pete hit the woodwork. Deep into the second half we were still looking for a goal when Pete combined with Glenn who scored a great goal. That was it, our first draw.

Scorer: Glenn - 1

Game 14 v Halswell, Halswell, 11 July, Result 2-0 win

Still in the depth of the flu season and Sam was away with Uni. We struggled in the first half and it wasn't until half time when we re-organised that we got going. Two second half goals saw us ease away. Again good to beat an MPL reserve team, esp as their firsts were playing after so their reserves were full strength.

Scorers: Glenn - 1, Scott - 1

Game 15 v Technical, Avonhead, 18 July, Result 3-1 win

A tension packed 6 pointer against the team right behind us. It didn't start well and they were up early on and I had thoughts of Deja vu from the previous encounter. However we kept our cool and hit back shortly after. From then on we were in control. Run of the season goes to Grant as he sprinted the whole field to get to the penalty spot before the ref had finished blowing his whistle. Asapha Powell (no relation to Ryan) would have been left in his wake!

Scorers: Phil - 1, Grant -1 (pen), Scott - 1

Game 16 v Burnside, Burnside, 25 July, Result 2-0 win

Up against it from the start with the Burnside firsts not having a game, so this meant their reserves were at full strength. Also we had given our regular keeper james to the firsts but Shoes capably deputised. However as in previous pressure games we came up with a massive effort and the boys applied huge pressure from the start. This saw Jermey score our first after a run down the right and he slammed in a fantastic goal. A while later Phil limped off, but Cookie came on and had a blinder, the ball looked like it was glued to him as he set off on many taunting runs. Mid second half Glenn finished off a great move with an awesome goal and we were home.
The sparkling wine was consumed as we had won the league with two games left.

Scorers: Jeremy - 1, Glenn - 1

Game 17 v Nomads, Avonhead, 1st August, Result 3-0 win

With Sam away on first team duty, Phil injured and others away we might have been stretched. As it was we won at a canter. Tony did the damage early on when he pressured their keeper and from the subsequent tackle slotted the ball home. Tony later added to his tally as did Ryan.

Scorers: Tony - 2, Ryan P - 1

Game 18 v Burnside, Avonhead, 8th August, Result 2-2 draw

Still some regulars like Simon and Ryan away which gave some of our under 19's a place on the bench. We played pretty well and looked to be cruising to a win, subs were made as we wound the game down. However a last gasp corner was bundled in to see us finish with a draw. A bit disappointing but our season was won 2 weeks ago.

Scorers: Glenn - 1, Cameron - 1
