WELCOME CHRISTIAN MULLER
Christian Muller has just arrived from Germany and is a top class keeper looking to play and assist with coaching in 2007. Currently
Christian is staying at the Prior house. Good to have you on board Christian, hopefully you will enjoy your time in NZ and with Avon.
LOSS OF A FORMER CLUB MEMBER
It has come as a great shock to learn of the death of Stewart Squires from cancer this week. Stu was a former player, coach, newsletter editor and more.
As a science teacher at Riccarton High he taught many of our younger club members, Stu also coached the first XI.
Everyone who knew Stu will appreciate what a genuinely all round good guy he was. Stu was easy to get on with, very knowlegeable about the game
and had a genuine love of our sport.
The club sends it's sincere condolences to Stewart's family at this time of great pain. Thanks Stu for everything, we will miss you heaps.
CLOSING
DAY 6-A-SIDE COMPETITION, 30 SEPTEMBER, RICCARTON DOMAIN
Our best run closing day 6 a side ever with a full compliment of 8
teams.
As usual a team snuck out from the pack and took the competition. This
year it was the Pressies A, who after a pretty tough season took us all
by surprise. Their scalps included the MPL team when John 'the cat'
Whittle came flying out and missed the ball to leave Chris Gunkel with
a tap in to secure the major upset of the day. Runners up were Division
1 and Division 3 and the rest of the pack was close behind.
Lots of thanks to Dave & Tom Holland, Peter & Andrew
Hawthorne and Tim Keely from the Junior Youth A team for running the
scoring and barbecue.

to all the club members that came along and supported this event. Award

AVON UNITED CLAIMS SENIOR MENS TITLE
For the first time in a number of seasons a senior mens team has
claimed a title. Our mens Division 1 team coached by Nick Williams won
the mens Division 1 league at the weekend. Among the players in the
young squad are 9 lads aged 18 to 22 who have come through our junior
grades. For the final game on Saturday three of the four defenders and
all four midfielders were ex Avon youth players. Well done to all of
the team and their captain Sean Liddle.
CANTERBURY UNITED RAFFLE - SOMEONE IN THE CLUB WON A PRIZE
Lynda Prior tells us that one of the winning tickets
was sold by a club member.
AVON LOSE
SECOND PLAYOFF GAME V RICHMOND 3-1
Our game v Richmond at the weekend was a cruel reflection of the way
football matches can go. After creating all the early opportunities we
were hit on the break by Richmond's paid striker Batram Suri who
blasted in an unstoppable shot. It was still 1-0 at half time despite
our best efforts to draw level.
An early error in the second half saw us teetering at 2-0 down. However
a great comeback saw us create more chances with Cameron Long heading
in mid way through the second half. We created more chances which the
Richmond keeper kept out with skill and huge bravery.
Just as it looked like we were heading for extra time another of the
Richmond Solomon Islanders went down the right flank and crossed for
the replacement forward to put away. Game Over.
The result left our young squad and their contingent of supporters
stunned. This means we will lose our status as a Mainland Premier
League club next season. In a twist of irony we have our best points
tally for seasons, a top quality coaching-management structure and the
some of best players ever and we have been relegated. Football, the
beautiful game!
AVON WIN FIRST PLAYOFF GAME V RICHMOND 1-0
A crowd of around 300 saw Avon beat Richmond 1-0 at Riccarton Domain.
Richmond started off well and only some great work by our back 4 and
keeper Mike Nicolle kept us in it. A great header by Justin McLeod from
a corner saw us take the lead.
The second half was scoreless but we had good chances to increase the
lead as Justin, Cameron, Jermey King and Doyle went close (actually
Doyle's wasn't that close).
Thanks to all the volunteers who turned up to help. A special mention
to Ben Skinner, Kaye and Mark Doherty, Lynda Prior, Barbara and Glenn
Williams.
Still some places on the bus to Richmond for the second and most
exciting leg.

CANTERBURY UNITED - GRAND FINAL
A pretty close run thing. Full time was 3-3 and it went to penalties after a scoreless extra time. Even the
penalties went to sudden death and we lost 4-3.
Looking forward to next season. Good luck to Dan Terris and Ben Sigmund who are leaving. Ben you
have played well enough to get back in the All Whites. However Dan gets top prize of the opportunity to sign for
Avon if he comes back to NZ.
Looking forward to next summer already.

NZ v MALAYSIA QE2 PARK SUNDAY FEBRUARY 19, 1-0 win to NZ
A pretty average game but then maybe we were expecting a bit too much for a side that hasn't played together
for a long time. Malaysia had very little to offer possibly because most of their players were called
Mohammed so how they know who to pass the ball to was a mystery to the crowd. Thier best chance came when their
striker had a one on one with Danny Hay. Why their striker didn't run past our oldest and slowest defender no one knows
but the chance was lost.
Towards the end NZ started to get things together and the introduction of Jermey Brockie and Shane Smeltz
helped lift the players. The 10,100 crowd and NZ Soccer, breathed a collective sigh of relief when we scored 5
minutes from time. Player of the day for me was Andy Barron who looked very comfortable in his first outing at this level.
SHAMROCK SUMMER SOCCER
The green hooped tops with white shorts and socks have completed their summer comeback. Our team finished with 6 wins
from 14 games. In the last game we lost 7-3 v Dux Delux. Nick played keeper first half and let 3 in in the 5 minutes
before half time. Gareth didn't have any more luck and they put 3 quick goals past hime in the 5 mins after half time.
We steadied and put Morgan in goal and conceded another shortly after. Ko got two consolation goals and Dave Briggs
another but it was all over by then..
Top players were Glenn, Dave and Luc. Top scorers are Dave on 6, Grant on 6, and Ben on 3.
Check out the stats on the Shamrock website for more info, if it hasn't been
updated give Morgan a call on 021 674575 and ask him what's going on.
